Herb Reed and The Platters, The Flamingos, The Shirelles and The Coasters "He has got to be the long-lost Bee Gee brother - how can anyone sing so high and still father a child?...Sounding exactly, yes, exactly like every group or artist who's songs they sing - The Doobie Brothers, The Beatles, The Platters, The Bee Gees and more, this group infuses anyone over 20 with an instant dose of nostalgia... Their sound and charisma, for a four piece band, has people listening with their mouths open." Parkland Life Magazine THE PAVILION GRILLE Review From The Sun-Sentinel "Located in a five-story office building, the Pavilion Grille offers a well-appointed, cozy, 50-seat dining room, plus "inside al fresco" dining and banquet space out in the cavernous lobby area. The lobby also boasts a full service bar and polished dance floor. When I visited for dinner, the evening meal was utterly superb. Reiki works on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels; this energy flows only when it is for the highest good of everyone involved. It cannot harm anyone. It is nonreligious and it's principles are universal. It destresses the body and allows self healing to begin. What you might feel is a sense of peace and serenity that seems to flow over you in waves and perhaps a sensation of a warm energy coming from the practitioners hands. It's hard to describe what happens; you need o come and experience it for yourself. Just come.

Florida Marlins vs. Boston Red Sox
http://www.zvents.com/images/internal/9/7/4/9/img_939479_primary.jpg?resample_method= Batter Up! Casey at the Bat by Ernest Thayer It all started in 1885 when George Hearst decided to run for state senator in California. To self-promote his brand of politics, Hearst purchased the San Francisco Examiner. At the completion of the election, Hearst gave the newspaper to his son, William Randolph Hearst. William, who had experience editing the Harvard Lampoon while at Harvard College, took to California three Lampoon staff members. One of those three was Ernest L. Thayer who signed his humorous Lampoon articles with the pen name Phin. In the June 3, 1888 issue of The Examiner, Phin appeared as the author of the poem we all know as Casey at the Bat. The poem received very little attention and a few weeks later it was partially republished in the New York Sun, though the author was now known as Anon. A New Yorker named Archibald Gunter clipped out the poem and saved it as a reference item for a future novel. Weeks later Gunter found another interesting article describing an upcoming performance at the Wallack Theatre by comedian De Wolf Hopper - who was also his personal friend. The August 1888 show (exact date is unknown) had members from the New York and Chicago ball clubs in the audience and the clipping now had a clear and obvious use. Gunter shared Casey at the Bat with Hopper and the perfomance was nothing short of legendary. Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the single most famous baseball poem ever written. "Love has its sonnets galore. War has its epics in heroic verse. Tragedy its sombre story in measured lines. Baseball has Casey at the Bat." - Albert Spalding Casey at the Bat by Ernest Lawrence Thayer © Published: The Examiner (06-03-1888) The Outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day: The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play. And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same, A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game. A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast; They thought, if only Casey could get but a whack at that - We'd put up even money, now, with Casey at the bat. But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake, And the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake; So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat, For there seemed but little chance of Casey's getting to the bat. But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all, And Blake, the much despis-ed, tore the cover off the ball; And when the dust had lifted, and the men saw what had occurred, There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third. Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell; It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell; It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled upon the flat, For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat. There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place; There was pride in Casey's bearing and a smile on Casey's face. And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat, No stranger in the crowd could doubt 'twas Casey at the bat. Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt; Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt. Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip, Defiance gleamed in Casey's eye, a sneer curled Casey's lip. And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air, And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there. Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped- "That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said. From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar, Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore. "Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted someone on the stand; And its likely they'd a-killed him had not Casey raised his hand. With a smile of Christian charity great Casey's visage shone; He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on; He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew; But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, "Strike two." "Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud; But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed. They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain, And they knew that Casey wouldn't let that ball go by again. The sneer is gone from Casey's lip, his teeth are clenched in hate; He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate. And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go, And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow. Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out. "Phin" Casey at the Bat by Ernest Lawrence Thayer ©

Jamaica: Adventure, Ecology, History & Humanitarianism
http://www.theworldwidegourmet.com/travel/carribean/jamaica/images/ochorios.jpg Some of you know our member Kevin Green... He's a history teacher with great knowledge, respect and love for Jamaica. For many years Kevin has taken groups of students on summer tours of this island nation... In the past few years he has turned his focus to more humanitarian events... Humanitarian assistance is needed even more due to the impact in Jamaica of this years hurricane season... We still do plan to have Kevin lead us on a hike up the 7402' peak of the Jamaican Blue Mountains - however landslides have washed out the principal bridges required to make the trek... So- http://www.theworldwidegourmet.com/travel/carribean/jamaica/images/negril-bluecave.jpg Kevin and I are jointly planning a few days in Jamaica - probably two or three days assisting in school repair, delivery of school supplies, perhaps a small party for the school kids... and a few more days of our usual mix of biking, hiking, ecology and history... We'll be collecting school supplies, and other resources as time progresses... Kevin's here: http://travel.meetup.com/462/members/2967751/ And you know how to find me.... Jim And a little more about Jamaica: "'Tis the fairest isle eyes have ever seen" (Christopher Columbus 1494) Jamaica - the very word conjures up images of sun-drenched beaches, pulsating sounds of reggae music and the lilting accents of its people. It is an island known for its stunning natural beauty, rich culture and gifted people. Known as the 'land of wood and water', the island is approximately 11,000 square kilometres (4,250 square miles) with the majestic Blue Mountain Peak rising to over 2,260 metres (7,400 feet), from which on a clear day, you can see Cuba. Jamaica is the home of Blue Mountain Coffee, perhaps the most exquisite of all coffees and certainly one of the world?s most expensive. Undiscovered Jamaica ? the Jamaica that takes you on hiking trails high in the mountains and down into hidden grottoes. It is the Jamaica of community tourism where one visits with the locals, drinks a Red Stripe Beer and shares in the 'cool runnings'. It is a host festivals that celebrate food and culture ? Yam, Shrimp, Jerk, the Festival of Independence and also Carnival, Jamaican style. The diversity of Jamaica is what sets it apart from other Caribbean islands. The major cities and towns offer variety to visitors and citizens alike. Kingston Harbour is the world's seventh largest natural deep-water harbour and often, one spots sailboats gliding by large tankers pulling into port. Kingston offers an intimate view of the culture and day-to-day life of Jamaicans, whether at work or play. Visit a museum, an art gallery, watch a play, attend a cricket match at Sabina Park, and don't miss a scintillating performance of the world reknown National Dance Theatre Company. Travel down to the Trench Town Culture Yard ? early home to Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and end the day with high tea at Devon House. Just west of Ocho Rios is Dunn's River Falls, an experience and challenge not to be missed! Climb the falls, relax in the bracing rock pools and take a dip in the sea. Also, nearby is the natural wonder of Fern Gully. Take a slow drive through this winding road, once a riverbed, with its wide array of tropical flora and catch on film, sunbeams peeking through the densely packed foliage. Mandeville is located on the Manchester plateau 2,000 feet above sea level- it is a cool, clean, rural Jamaican town. Average temperatures hover around 78F and nights are considerably cooler than coastal areas. The lush green countryside captivates and is a main reason why this area is so popular with Jamaicans who return home to enjoy their retirement. Mandeville and surrounding areas are known for gracious homes and wonderful gardens, some of which are open for tours. The South Coast is an area to be enjoyed slowly and quietly. Stop and meet the people, stay a bit, and walk about. Visit the old colonial town of Black River and take a safari ride up the Black River to come eye to eye with alligators. Drive through majestic Bamboo Avenue, take a day at YS Falls Don't miss the view from Lovers? Leap or Accompong where the Maroons, descendants of runaway slaves, actively preserve their culture from over 250 years ago. Port Antonio A banana port, the first tourist town in Jamaica, its avenue of palms stands watch over the town, surrounded by lush rain forests, scenic coastline, luxurious villas and hidden beaches. It is for quiet enjoyment- take a romantic trip rafting down the Rio Grande River, visit Somerset Falls or go for a swim in the Blue Lagoon which is, according to local lore, bottomless. Visit Titichfield Hill, a colonial neighbourhood and take in the amazing vista of Port Antonio harbour. Stop at Folly, a ruin with a story, or take trips to Reach Falls, Nonsuch Caves, or the Blue Mountains.

Rescheduled For Late Summer -Costa Rica
History, Ecology and Adventure March 8 - 16 2008 http://www.govisitcostarica.com/images/photos/full_drakeBayRiver.jpg Covering only 0.01 percent of the Earth?s landmass, Costa Rica is believed to host approximately 5 percent of its biodiversity. You may see jaguar or other wild cats, but most probably you will be able to enjoy over 13.000 plant species, including 1,300 varieties of orchids and more than 850 species of birds, 209 mammal species, 220 species of reptiles, and 163 species of amphibians. Civilization existed in Costa Rica for thousands of years before the arrival of Columbus, and evidence of human occupation in the region dates back 10,000 years. Among the cultural mysteries left behind by the area's pre-Columbian inhabitants are thousands of perfectly spherical granite bolas that have been found near the west coast. The sizes of these relics range from that of a baseball to that of a bus. Ruins of a large, ancient city complete with aqueducts were recently found east of San Jose, and some sophisticated gold and jade work was being wrought in the southwest as far back as 1,000 years ago. Archeological sites in the central highlands and Nicoya peninsula have shown evidence of influence from the Mexican Olmec and Nahuatl civilizations. By the time Columbus arrived, there were four major indigenous tribes living in Costa Rica. The east coast was the realm of the Caribs, while the Borucas, Chibchas, and Diquis resided in the southwest. Only a few hundred thousand strong to begin with, none of these peoples lasted long after the dawn of Spanish colonialism. Some fled, while many others perished from the deadly smallpox brought by the Spaniards. Having decimated the indigenous labor force, the Spanish followed a common policy and brought in African slaves to work the land. Seventy thousand of their descendants live in Costa Rica today, and the country is known for good relations among races. Regrettably, only 1 percent of Costa's Rica's 3 million people are of indigenous heritage. An overwhelming 98 percent of the country is white, and those of Spanish descent call themselves Ticos. Of all the Spanish colonies, Costa Rica enjoyed the least influence as a colony. It was initially a tough and unpopular place to settle, with few valuable or easily exploited resources. The Spanish were far more interested in developing their holdings in Mexico and Peru, where vast amounts of silver and gold were being obtained. The early hapless settlers who came to Costa Rica were left largely to their own devices, and the first successful establishment of a colonial city was not until 1562, when Juan Vasquez de Coronado founded Cartago. When Mexico rebelled against Spain in 1821, Costa Rica and the rest of Central America followed suit. Two years later, a faction in Costa Rica even opted to become part of Mexico, sparking a civil war in the country's center between four neighboring cities. After the republican cities of San Jose and Alajuela soundly defeated the pro-Mexican Heredia and Cartago, sovereignty was established. So what's on the tentative agenda? Walk the crater of Irazú Volcano, splash in the wild Pacuare River, bike through primary rainforest en route to the Pacific Coast, sea kayak and enjoy the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Experience Arenal's volcanic activity with the best tropical beach ride in the Nicoya Peninsula. Along the way we will visit active Arenal Volcano, deserted beaches in Nicoya, cascading waterfalls and the enchanting waters of the Northern Pacific Coast The wild Pacuare is a world renown river because of its scenic beauty and exciting rapids. We'll raft through primary rainforest, by indigenous homeland and down to the Caribbean lowlands. Irazú and Turrialba Volcanoes and Manuel Antonio beach. We may mountain bike near the Central Valley. Whitewater adventures in the Pacuare, Pejibaye, Toro, Arenal and Sarapiquí rivers. Plus visits to the Turrialba and Poas Volcanoes as well as Tapanti National Park and La Marta Private Reserve. Oh, yes, and ziplining... The dates are firm so plan your vacation schedule accordingly Lastly costing: You buy your own airline ticket - should be ~ $200 Lodging - we'll focus on low cost yet clean and safe accomodations - 1,2,3 4 or more per room - that's your choice... As we've done on previous adventures, this is not a 5 star / linen napkin event. Our goal is to provide the most adventure for the least amount of money... Jim
